hum
hum (Artistic Director, Susanna Hood)
hum is an intimate physical sound. It is a privacy that people can hear and feel. It is the territory between sound and movement from which a new sensory language emerges.
hum is a Toronto-based interdisciplinary performing arts company dedicated to the creation and dissemination of highly innovative, powerfully communicative and transformative performance, rooted in emotion, that connects with audiences on a fundamentally human level. The company is committed to the creation of new work, the development of on-going repertoire, and dissemination through performance and education. It seeks to mine an ongoing exploration of the boundaries between movement, sound, theatre, improvisation and other media for all these purposes.
Activities of the company include creation, production, and touring of integrated-interdisciplinary, dance and music performance pieces, the teaching of movement and sound workshops to artists in these fields, youth, and the general public, the recording of music, and ongoing laboratory work in improvisation and composition.
Together with musical collaborator Nilan Perera, Artistic Director Susanna Hood mines the full potential of the body as an instrument. By seemlessly interweaving voice and movement they create work that communicates on a powerfully visceral level. The company's performance work has been described as "kinetic, multi-layered, voice-driven" (NOW Magazine) and
"a must see event, as precious, as rare, as that proverbial pot of gold" (the Globe and Mail).
